尤金·奥尼尔的精神生态意识研究

摘要

作为美国严肃戏剧的创始人,尤金·奥尼尔一直被冠以具有悲剧心灵的最伟大戏剧家。奥尼尔一生四次获普利策奖,一次获诺贝尔文学奖,共留给世人五十部剧作,除了一部《啊!荒野》之外,全部都是悲剧。
　　 奥尼尔把悲剧作为自己的武器,用以展示现代人无以自拔的精神困境,用以挖掘当代社会的病根,用以理解同时代人,用以寻求物质和精神世界的某种平衡,用以为流浪的灵魂寻找一块栖息之地。奥尼尔对于心理和哲学的思考不仅为他的悲剧增加了深度和力量,更展示了奥尼尔强烈的精神生态意识。
　　 奥尼尔的悲剧心灵和精神生态意识源于二十世纪上半期物欲横流、人饱受异化和物化的生活现实,源于他自身悲剧的命运,源于世纪之交哲学、文学以及戏剧主题的内向化,更源于悲剧与其它艺术形式相比较所具有的独特功能和本质。精神生态的要义在于心灵家园的系统平衡。精神生态学更看重的是关系、是交往。奥尼尔悲剧主人公饱受主体异化、生活风格齐一化、心灵拜物化、精神真空化、行为无能化的折磨。人割裂了与周围一切的联系。人的精神世界一片荒芜。人之不为人的状况在奥尼尔的悲剧中得到了淋漓尽致的表达。同时,在奥尼尔悲剧的结尾,人与人之间和谐美好的原初联系、相互之间的谅解总能让饱受精神折磨的人的心灵复归平静。从而,奥尼尔的作品代表了他对人类命运的终极关怀和对人的精神原野的不断探索。奥尼尔是戏剧尤其是悲剧领域里对精神生态给予极大关注的先驱,具有极强的精神生态意识。
