译者的思维模式与翻译策略——以林语堂对外讲中为例

摘要

林语堂是第一个出生在中国本土，成长在中国本土，但又有着游欧旅美经历、深受西方思想影响、最后回归中国文化的大作家、翻译家，他一生完成了大量的翻译实践和英语写作经历，其翻译理论也自成一家，达到了一定的理论高度。20世纪30、40年代林语堂译介中国文化的成功与其通俗阐释手法的灵活运用和独特的心理模式是紧密相联的。在西方强势语境下，他能揣摩西方读者心理，充分发挥译者的主体性，架起了一座中西文化交流的桥梁。 本文试图从心理学和翻译学的角度出发，通过对林语堂的译作《浮生六记》英译本及英语作品《京华烟云》、《吾国与吾民》和《生活的艺术》中涉及中国文化翻译的典型例子进行分析，系统地总结出林语堂在对外讲中时采用的翻译策略经及他的心理结构，并且找出其对现阶段中译外的启示。首先，本文作者也认为，中国传统文化是一种诗性文化，林语堂在宣讲中国文化时，尤其注重介绍的是中国传统文化，如何将儒、释、道结合而衍生出来的中国特色文化介绍出去，林语堂用的一种通俗化的手段，其手段的采用源于他中西结合的生活背景与教育背景，中西文化在林语堂身上结合得很和谐：“两脚踏中西文化，一心评宇宙文章”是其自我真实写照；林语堂的写作与翻译渊源起于对辜鸿铭与林纾的肯定，自身条件的水到渠成，作为中国文人的责任感和赞助人赛珍珠给予他的影响5。他从英语翻译到英语写作是一由隐性的译者向显性的作者的过渡。作为一个显性的作者，在选材方面，他享有更多的自由；在译者主体性方面，因为林语堂有很强的中国文化取向，异化的手段被大量采用，但同时他对西方读者的口味与接受能力相当明了，为了增强可读性，归化手段同样不能忽视。在选材方面，因为要适应西方读者和受其自我东方主义的影响，他更注重对中国传统文化的译介。所以重写也是他的策略之一。 本文还就西方汉学家对中国文化的理解与林语堂对中国文化的理解作一对比，分析出其优势及矛盾。随着中国国力的提升，对外讲中的任务会更加繁重，这完全由西方汉学家来完成不太现实，所以，通过对林语堂的通俗化的策略进行分析，来提高我们这方面的翻译水平是很有必要的。本文共分五部分。第一部分为引言，介绍林语堂生平与主要作品及界定关键词，如：思维模式，主体性。第一章从心理学角度分析林语堂的思维形成过程。第二章探讨林语堂中国文化阐释经历及对中国文化的操控。第三章分析林语堂译者主体性及翻译策略。第四章分析林语堂与西方汉学家对中国文化理解的差异给中译外的启示。
