Organizations often flounder when establishing a metrics program. Notorious paths to failure include mimicking other organizations, and searching for "industry standard metrics" or "industry standard norms." Even the misuse of a well-established systematic method, such as the GQM (Goal-Quality-Metric) approach, can lead to botched efforts. We introduce the use of an improved version of the methodology, called GQM-R_X, which avoids the caveats stemming from some of the inherent characteristics of GQM. The following examples are presented to illustrate the practical application of the methodology: Size Measure Selection for Cost Estimation, Size Measurement for Tracking Project Progress, Software Productivity, Defect Density, and Cycle Time.
