This paper outlines a framework for combining the use of wastewater process models used todesign treatment plants with real-time process information from online nutrient analyzers andprobes. The benefit of this framework is to improve effluent quality and the utility of theinformation provided by the instruments and reduce operating costs. A case study is discussed toillustrate key concepts. Real-time optimization of the following five key functions of BNRfacilities is addressed: dissolved oxygen control, nitrification, denitrification, biologicalphosphorus removal, and solids separation. Additional work is needed to develop algorithms thataccount for the complex interactions between nitrogen and phosphorus removal and can makequick decisions about how to best optimize the process at any given time.
