BUILDING EXTENSIBLE INFORMATION PORTAL SYSTEM FOR ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION

Our project team has been developing a contentrnmanagement system called NetCommons since 2001.rnUnlike other major content management systems thatrnprovide only content management functions,rnNetCommons also provides groupware and learningrnmanagement functions. By using NetCommons, one canrneasily and inexpensively integrate distributed educationalrnfunctions, such as school homepages, e-learning,rngroupware, and information archives, into one. One canrnprovide this software as a service: he/she can install morernthan 100 NetCommons on one server and provide thernservice to more than 2000 users at the same time. So far,rnmore than 1500 schools have adopted NetCommons asrntheir school portal system in Japan.rnIn this paper, we report on new functions that wernadded to NetCommons. We added functions for backingrnup virtual collaborative work spaces and moving andrncopying virtual spaces. Using these functions, teachersrncan easily move their virtual work spaces from one site tornanother. Another new function we added is one forrncreating sub-groups inside a group. Using this function, arngroup of students can manage their own virtual workrnspace under the supervision of a teacher.
