Waste tyre generation is showing a rising trend in many regions of the world, and this is causingenvironmental burden. The tyres can be processed into shreds and chips, and used as an additive to modify theproperties of soils for use in field applications. Keeping in view of the limited studies on the use of waste tyrechips with fine grained soil, an experimental program was undertaken to investigate its influence on thestrength characteristics of a clayey silt soil. In this study, unconfined compression and CBR tests were conducted.A mass of 10% chips content is considered to be the optimum for reinforcing the soil. This is soundsince the use of waste tyres along with fine-grained soils also in geotechnical projects will increase the recycledvolume, and will reduce the environmental impact.
