The paper is concerned with the modeling of the mechanical behavior of hybrid multilayered plates, i.e.laminated plates with surface bonded and/or embedded piezoelectric actuator layers. Specifically, we are interested in modeling the interaction between the passive master plate and the actuator layers. To do this, the paper deals with the finite element formulation of a quite general geometrically nonlinear theory of hybrid laminated plates recently developed and tested by the first two authors. In order to assess the accuracy of the proposed hybrid plate finite elements and the relative importance of some non-classical effects (transverse shear deformation, continuity conditions at the interfaces, etc.), a numerical investigation is performed on some samples studied by other researchers by making use of other models of interaction.
