ACCEPTABILlTY OF NOISES FROM OFFICE MACHINES

Product noise control engineers can better assist in the design of products for acceptable acousticsif they understand customer expectations of the product’s sound emissions. Without thisunderstanding of customer expectations, there are risks that the product will be too noisy (withcustomer dissatisfaction and possible loss of sales) or that the product will be quieter thannecessary (with costs for noise control measures that are not needed). Lyon presents acomprehensive introduction to this problem [l], and the present paper is intended to expand uponsome of his ideas with emphasis upon examples from computer and business equipment located inoffice environments.
