The lessons learned from planning, designing, constructing, and commissioning biogas-fueled cogeneration systems at water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs) are presented. Site specific examples from four WRRF cogeneration projects are given. Insights from different phases of the projects are given with regards to selection of cogeneration units, biogas treatment process, hydronic system design, and electrical interconnection. The heat recovery and power production capacity, redundancy, and efficiency were considered. Designs included the blending of digester gas, natural gas, and landfill gas. The impact of blended gases on gas treatment and meeting air emission requirements were evaluated. Hydronic systems were designed for both mesophilic and higher temperature thermophilic anaerobic digestion systems.
