Vegetable Oil vs Mineral Oil in Quenching Applications

摘要

The objective of this paper is to compare distortion and mechanical properties of parts after quenching in vegetable oil and mineral oil in a commercial production process. The first part of this work compares the relative hardening penetration for vegetable oil and mineral oil.All the trials were performed in a quench tank where the vegetable oil has been in use for 10 years. The work utilizes quenched and tempered steels (AISI 4140) and low carbon content steel (AISI 1040).
