Recovery efforts dealing with extremely viscous oils over the past few years have led to some interesting enhancements in handling equipment. When using response equipment with viscous oils, equipment becomes covered with a sticky product that is difficult to clean. In spite of efforts to minimize oil coverage, there is inevitably a large range of equipment that must be cleaned at the completion of use prior to shipping or storage.rnTechniquel and products demonstrated to be effective at cleaning lighter oils from equipment may not be effective when dealing with heavy, viscous oils. Either additional time may be necessary, or repeated attempts at cleaning may be required -which increases costs associated with decontamination. This project attempted to identify a number of readily available products and methodologies that may efficiently clean heavy oil contaminated equipment.rnThree categories of products were selected for evaluation including solvents, degreasers, and dispersants along with techniques involving soaking, manual cleaning, and power washing. A description of the testing and results are presented in this report.
