Research has been carried out which has investigated processing technologies and materials that would reduce the environmental implications of thin film PV cells based on CIS and related materials. Two main types of cell have been investigated, CuInS_2 based thin film cells utilising novel sulphidisation techniques and window materials and ETA cells based on CuInSe_2 absorber materials using spraying technologies for the deposition of TiO_2 layers. This paper looks at the techniques and materials developed within this research and compares them with those used normally for this technology using risk assessment methodologies as laid out in EC Directive 93/67/EEC.
