FOREST MANAGEMENT IN MOUNTAINS A case study of a protection forest in Savoy, France

Forest managers are struggling to meet new demands. It is urgent to redefine the extent of their responsibility in respect of the forest and to provide the means for forest management. Economic and multifunction requirements are often at odds with effective management for ecological or hazard mitigation ends. Clear and discrete objectives need to be prescribed for the management of each forest block and in the case of protection forest, subsidies provided. These issues are illustrated by a case study of the management of a rockfall protection forest in Isere, Sainte-Foy Tarentaise.
