A schedule analyst's job goes beyond the basics of updating schedules and providing Gantt charts with critical paths. He/she should provide project management and teams with insight into the health of the project through trend analysis, and assist in identifying any specific activities that may negatively impact the project. Often, standard schedule reporting features are limited and not user-friendly. In many cases, activity trend analysis and schedule quality metrics are not provided, but must be purchased for specific schedule platforms and versions. The schedule trend control charts presented in this paper are intended to remedy this situation and include: Trend of Total Float, an S-curve based on finish date and milestone trends and associated analytical techniques that can be used across platforms. They were developed by copying and pasting schedule data into a Microsoft Excel workbook and are primarily designed for the schedule analyst, but can be presented to management.
