Lessons Learned from the Extended Teamwork Study on Work Organization, Collaboration Technologies, and Automatic Agents

The introduction of new operational concepts into nuclear power plant (NPP) operation is currently being debated. The Extended Teamwork study explored how familiarity with operation in a new operational environment would impact teamwork. As compared to most present plants, the operational environment used in the study was characterized by holding: Higher automation levels, changed operator roles, and the introduction of new collaboration technology. The operational environment used in the study allowed a range of lessons learned to be derived on issues related to interface design and teamwork. The lessons learned are organized under three headings: Work organization, which focuses on operator roles and work practices, cooperation mediated via collaboration technology, and human co-operation with advanced automatic agents. The lessons learned may be of relevance for designers and researchers involved in the development of new operational concepts and in upgrade projects.
