Spilt ground plane is a common structure on printed circuit board, which produces noticeable reflection and crosstalk. In this work, characteristic mode analysis is adopted to analyze signal integrity (SI) of signal traces crossing split ground plane. By calculating modal mutual admittance, we can find the key mode that influences the transmission, reflection or crosstalk on the signal traces. The modal admittance is transformed into the time domain to examine its time-varying behavior. Means to reinforce the transmission mode and to suppress the reflection and crosstalk modes is suggested by the CMA, and hence improve the SI.
