Environmental-Friendly Anti-Corrosion Behavior of Cafe Layered Double Hydroxide for the Durability of Concrete Steel Structure

The concrete is deteriorated due to corrosion of the reinforcement steel, which is a major problem in field of construction resulting in a huge economic loss and serious safety disasters frequently. The main destruction factor of reinforced concrete durability is chloride penetration, whose penetration into reinforced concrete accelerates corrosion of rebars leading to degradation of the structure. In this study, we fabricate calcium-iron layered double hydroxides (CaFe-LDHs) via facile one-pot synthesis by utilizing a modified co-precipitation method under room temperature and investigate the effect of corrosion protection on rebar from chloride ion. The maximum uptake capacity over 800 mg/g (Cl~-/LDH) for chloride ion was obtained by an LDHs, heat-treated at 700°C of LDHs (C-700 LDHs) which was over 10 times of pristine LDHs. Moreover, when the C-700 LDHs was applied for rebar corrosion, noticeable inhibition efficieny of 98.87% was obtained which was comparing with rebar without LDHs. The mechanism for the enhanced removal performance of chloride ion and anti-corrosion effect is elucidated drawing on the structural transformation of CaFe-LDHs. These observations make the structure modulated CaFe-LDHs as an new outstanding corrosion protection material as an additive or as a coating material in concrete structure in the construction field.
