The opportunity to exploit the internet for education at a distance and to give a better experience for on-campus student is clear. To show this can be done effectively to enhance the educational experience is more difficult. The prize of creating a successful online course is high as is the commitment of resources, and hence the risk. This paper discusses the considerations behind the ongoing development of an MBA Online course by the Faculty of Business and Management in the University of Lincolnshire and Humberside. A clarification of what is meant by "distance" education is discussed. The goals of the project are outlined as is the nature of the master's level of education proposed the MBA. The background research completed as part of the European Union funded INTELLECT project is discussed together with the background of other similar developments in the United Kingdom and beyond. Important here are the practical considerations of what is practical rather than practicable, a mistaken which has resulted in the failure of many IT-based course programs. The paper concludes with a discussion on the changing nature of teaching in an e-learning environment and the consequences for the strategic development of an e-business school.
