This work describes traffic patterns and the daily variability of mobile soruces in rural and urban areas in and around the Nashville Matropopolitan Area. Traffic counter data, video recordings and speed data collected during the 1995 SOS Nashville/Middle Tennessee Ozone Field Study are used to analyzed the spatial and temporal distribution of traffic volume, vehicle speed, and vehicle classification. Using traffic volume as a surrogate for mobile emissions, a simple method is employed to characterize the daily variability of emissions on the different types of urban and rural roads. The method is also used to describe the daily variability of mobie emissions for the whole modeling domain. Implications of this work for the improvements of mobile emission inventories are discussed.
