The headlight (2) has an optical imaging device comprising a free forming surface for optical imaging. LEDs of LED fields are individually controlled by an electronic control unit. A number of illuminating patterns of the LED fields is stored in the control unit. The illuminating patterns are controlled by the control unit and LED fields, where the arrangement and respective brightness of the number of LEDs are determined by each illuminating pattern. The optical imaging device comprises an optical lens with a surface, which is designed as the free forming surface. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a vehicle headlight.
