The method involves reducing distance (Delta y) of a vehicle (1) from a middle region (BM) or a traffic lane middle (4) or a lateral position at the middle region when the vehicle is partially moved in two edge regions (BR, BL). A traffic lane is partitioned into the two edge regions and the middle region based on type of a road surface and/or breadth of the traffic lane and/or traffic lane curvature and/or vehicle breadth and/or driving speed and/or traffic situation. Traffic lane gradient is determined, where the traffic lane is a free traffic lane. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program comprising instructions to perform a method for automatic transverse guidance of a vehicle along a road surface (2) a computer program product comprising instructions to perform a method for automatic transverse guidance of a vehicle along a road surface (3) a device for performing a method for automatic transverse guidance of a vehicle along a road surface.
