Controlling the near-infra red (NIR) absorptivity has attracted great interest in materials science and has many practical applications. For the realization of electro-optic switching, chromophores must modulate light transmission at “telecommunication wavelengths” (i.e., 850, 1300, and 1550 nm, called the first, second, and third window, respectively) for fiber-optic communications, in response to electrical inputs. Despite extensive research on mixed-valence (MV) compounds, the relation between the above numerical targets in intervalence charge transfer (IVCT) transitions energies and the chemical structures remain poorly described. In this report, we present a non-innocent ligand (NIL)-based approach for modulating electronic coupling of MV complexes.
