Salmonella enterica spp. is a common etiologic agent of clinical disease in swine and potential source of contamination of pork products. The two most common serovar in swine include Salmonella enterica serovar Cholerasuis (serogroup CI) or Salmonellaenterica serovar Typhimurium (serogroup B), both of which can cause enteritis or enterocolitis in growing pigs. Sources of Salmonella enterica are spread via the oral-fecal route, with clinical Salmonella enterica outbreaks often occurring after periods of increased stress. However, clinical signs may vary depending on virulence, dose, and resistance, with some exposed populations of swine appearing asymptomatic.
