The food industry is facing ever changing requirements on the packaging solutions. For example, the discussion on food contamination by mineral oils started way back in the 2000s or the lately discussion on endocrine disruptive effects caused by per or poly fluorinated allylic substances (PFASs) coming from classical oil and grease resistant (OGR) paper and board grades. Old concepts are either not meeting new, up-coming requirements or existing technologies are banned or not accepted any longer. The fiber-based industries, the paper and board mills but also the converters, have to provide products fit for purpose - independent whether there is (already) a legal need or a public expectation. We, as the paper industry, have to address this market need seriously - with the actual discussion on marine littering we should use the momentum and promote our sustainable, recyclable and economically attractive paper and board qualities. In this presentation, we will discuss the changing market and the need for barrier coatings (mineral oil and especially OGR). With the Extomine? product family, Omya offers ready-to-use barrier solutions fitting to the industry.
