Cystitis or Transitional Cell Carcinoma? Differentiation of Bacterial Infection and Cancer of the Bladder

The diagnosis of cystitis versus bladder cancer can be a frustrating one in many cases. Severe cystitis can lead to a thickened bladder wall, and, if severe, sometimes cause a mass effect within the bladder. Bladder cancer, specifically transitional cell carcinoma (TCC), can cause clinical signs very similar to cystitis, and, in fact, many cases of TCC are complicated by underlying infection. Given the difference in prognosis and therapy, it is important to understand how to differentiate between these two diseases and appropriately advise clientele.
