Small fast craft have been revolutionised by the development of ruggedised electronic systems, and lightweight structures and powerplants. Today <24m craft can have capabilities that were previously unique to larger vessels. The key to successful capability development in small platforms is the effective integration of the systems components into the craft's overall architecture, including the integration of the hardware and software with the human operators. Small fast craft have many different applications including Search & Rescue within harsh environmental conditions. By adopting a Human Centred Design approach and taking account of the requirements for Human Factors Integration/Human Systems Integration, the systems integration process can be optimised to deliver the operational capability required. This integration includes the smallest details of information display to support the essential Command & Control tasks, as well as larger design requirements such as Launch & Recovery.
