Coal has been the major natural source both energy and manufacturing industry since the Industrial Revolution. Despite all the efforts for clean energy production in the last decades, coal has been the most commonly used energy rescources for generating electricity around the world. Coal has been the most important strategic and domestic energy source in Turkey, but not utilized effectively as a domestic resource. Insufficient prospection, low production capacity and wrong policy preferences have led to very serious problems in the coal mining of Turkey. In this study, after clarifying the common problems in the coal mining sector, the solutions are determined according to the different points of views that were gathered.The solution of the problems encountered in coal mining has been considered by means of Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) method. In order to solve these problems, the whole criteria and the alternatives affecting the Decision Making (DM) process are determined. The Analytic Network Process (ANP) one of the important method of MCDM techniques is shortly introduced and then, the problem was analyzed by using the ANP method.
