For drum brakes that require Φ16.5" × 7" drum sizes, a weight reduction of 51 lbs. (23.1 kg) per wheel end can be achieved by replacing iron drum with Metal Matrix Composite (MMC) drums. Friction materials designed for iron drums do not deliver adequate brake performance against the MMC drum contact surface.
