Selenium-79 has a half-life of 295,000 years and belongs to fission products that are currently vitrified in alumino-borosilicate glasses of high chemical durability. Due to its long radioactive period, the knowledge of mechanisms of its incorporation in such matrices is essential. Scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) are among the few techniques that allow selenium distributions to be analysed at contents as low as a few tenths of weight percent. In this study, several synthesis conditions (carried out for simplified nuclear glass compositions at 1,100 °C) were examined in order to assess the influence of several parameters. Microstructures were characterised on a Philips XL30 W-TMP SEM equipped with a PRISM2000 PGT Si(Li) EDS detector.
