Brief Overview on Science and Technology Supportive Systemfor the Yellow River

Based on the concept of scientific and technology supportive system ( STSS) for the Yellow River, the author gives the structure of this system, including three sub —systems of water — sediment monitoring system, " Model Yellow River" project and "Digital Yellow River" project, and reviews the system' s origin. The pioneer of hydrologic observation in the Yellow River has a history of 4, 000 years and the hydrometric station and hydrological observation began after the year of 1911 according to modern hydrological knowledge. A German water conservancy scholar started a test with psychical model for the Yellow River in 1920s. With the development of computers and information technology, Yellow River Conservancy Committee built "Digital Yellow River" project on key issues for the Yellow River. This paper gives briefly an existed situation of this system, and analyzes the main three problems existed, namely water —sediment monitoring system doesn ' t satisfy the demand of the new situation , " model Yellow River" to be improved, "digital Yellow River" project construction should be strengthened. After analysizing the needs in detail to the three sub — systems for the Yellow River, the author at last gives four advices for the work in the next period, i. e. , paying more attention to the function of STSS, increasing the hardware' s construction, accelerating software' s development, and strengthening management of key issues for Yellow River.
