VIRTUAL CROSSMATCHING REALLY WORKS! THE CPTA EXPERIENCE

The implementation of virtual crossmatching is made possible by state-of-the-art antibody screening using the Luminex technology. In our hands, this technique is far superior to cytotoxicity and even ELISA, as we had been screening these patients previously in our former laboratory by CDC/AHG and ELISA. Since UNOS has been taking the initiative to move to virtual crossmatching, we took this opportunity to predict final XM results by establishing an accurate UA profile for each patient. Beginning in June 2006, the prospective Preliminary Crossmatch was replaced with the Virtual Crossmatch. We report here on our experience for the past 2 1/2 years, looking at all patients transplanted (n=203) from June 2006 to January 2009 relying on our assessment of unacceptable antigens (UA).
