The traditional classroom environment can often neglect factors that are essential for learning. The authors feel that reflection is an important aspect of the learning process which can be overlooked. Approaches to teaching can often place the student in a passive role. This is evident with the method in which video is regularly used as a teaching tool. When video is used in the classroom, it is usually for the purposes of showing documentaries, educational films and other informative material. Is the potential for the use of video in the modern classroom environment being fully utilised? The availability of accessible and user-friendly digital technology today offers opportunities that allow the student to become more engaged with the course material and their own learning. It is our intention to explore some of these opportunities with a view to fostering a more interactive use of video and to observe how video could promote reflectivity within an active participatory learning environment for learners. In this research, a range of techniques employing the use of video were conducted to engage the students and to assist them in reflecting on their learning. These include: 1. Act, look and learn. 2. DVR (Do it, View it, Review it). 3. Interactive Review The students were given a questionnaire to evaluate how the techniques helped facilitate their learning processes. The reaction was extremely positive. All of the students felt their appreciation of the topic was deepened by use of these approaches.
