The common denominator between the liquid extraction and solid leaching process is the solvent used. In liquid extraction bulk separations are effected from liquid mixtures and in solid leaching the bulk separations are carried out from solid mixtures. Liquid extraction is used in areas where it is difficult to separate the components otherwise. Some solvent loss during a continuous process with recycle will add to the cost of the separation. The original liquid mixture is called the feed and upon extraction becomes the raffinate. The extract refers to the portion of the product that contains the desired component or solute in cases where the feed mixture was a solution. If the desired component to be separated is a gas then the operation of separation would be stripping.
