This paper proposes guidelines for attracting people to public displays, and these guidelines can be used for deigning the public displays. A large variety of displays find their way into public spaces, and such displays can help us in our daily activities. However, we often miss out on chances to use them because they lack a functionality for attracting persons who haven' t noticed their presence. we studied a method of attraction, and developed a prototype system called "Spontaneous Mirror". Spontaneous Mirror is an information display that augments the display with the reflective characteristics of a mirror. The reflectiveness allows a person to notice the mirror' s existence, and mirrors are naturally attractive. A theory from visual psychology, the hierarchical structure of human visual psychology, was used to change the level of abstract information in the field of view. The system was installed in three public spaces, and evaluated by observation and interviews with people who encountered. The effectiveness of the "hierarchical design" was verified. Furthermore, a comparison was done in terms of the characteristics of a mirror by using a transmissive panel. As a result, 72.9% and 13.5% of the people were attracted to the display with and without the mirror functionality, respectively.
