Collective behavior is evident from differences in the hysteresis loops of dense and dilute Co nanoparticle assemblies (Fig. 1), but other techniques are needed to reveal the length scales of magnetic correlations. Small angle neutron scattering (SANS) is sensitive to magnetic correlations of up to several hundred nanometers, and when applied to assemblies of monodisperse nanoparticles (Fig. 2), contributions from inter- and intra-particle correlations can be distinguished.
