A Critical Evaluation of the Use of BAOS for the Management of an Analytical Laboratory

In a world where markets are shrieking, competition is more intense, laboratory analytical services are more technologically complex, the development of breakthrough business management techniques increasingly requires the application of diverse skills and expertise. BHPBilliton Aluminium Operating system (BAOS) is a tool used by all BHPBilliton Aluminium smelters to management teams' performance in the areas of quality, speed, cost, safety and morale (QSCSM) Mozal Laboratory has adopted BAOS principle and used (QSCSM) measures to track individual teams' performance and improve laboratory general performance. This paper highlights the principles of goal alignment as an underlying philosophy for the creation and management of laboratory team's mini business. It further illustrates how BAOS is being implemented and managed at Mozal laboratory and finally presents actual performance indicators in the areas of (QSCSM). We conclude that BAOS is a tool that equips leaders and teams with skills and expertise to implement world-best practices; it can be used to improved laboratory competitiveness through continuous improvement of quality, speed, cost, morale and safety-effectiveness, it provides immediate visible results in the workplace and it enhances teamwork, participation and continuous learning.
