In this paper a new approach to obtain sensorless velocity feedback for subwoofer is developed. The velocity estimation is done using a disturbance-observer type estimator. The subwoofer cone velocity is estimated by measuring the electric current in the voice-coil. Unlike previously reported work, the velocity estimator does not require the knowledge of the coupled mechanical dynamics and its environment. The proposed approach enables the development of a subwoofer velocity controller without expensive velocity measuring device. Experimental results demonstrated that closed-loop velocity control using the velocity estimation achieved comparable performance compared with closed-loop velocity control using measured velocity feedback. The proposed approach can be easily adapted to other moving-coil type linear actuators.
