The Framework for K-12 Science Education calls for the integration of engineering practices into pre-college science classrooms, because "providing students a foundation in engineering design allows them to better engage in and aspire to solve the major societal and environmental challenges they will face in the decades ahead." The recent Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) emphasize the influence and interdependence of science, engineering, and technology on society, yet many science teachers are ill-prepared to teach these in their existing curricular environments. For high school students to successfully engage with engineering practices, engineering projects need to be authentic, interdisciplinary, and feasible for teachers within existing curricular time, materials, and standards requirements.
