At the present time, lifetimes of artificial hip joint are as short as about 10-15 years. We attempted to improve the artificial hip joint lifetime by coating amorphous carbon films on ball of the artificial hip joint. The amorphous carbon films have many excellent properties, such as high hardness, low friction coefficients and low chemical inertness. However, the amorphous carbon films have low adhesive strength to a substrate. In this work, the adhesive strength of the amorphous carbon films were improved by doping of Ti as an active element and subsequent heat treatment in vacuum.
