摘要

Much of the land in northeast South Carolina was either abandoned by farmers in the 1920's or had been clearcut. Fires were frequent prior to the national policy of fire exclusion. By the 1970's the forest understorey was dense and the forest had beenrepeatedly high-graded. A system was needed that would improve the value of future stands while maintaining the diverse hardwood component. Mixed pine-hardwood stands occur naturally as mid-successional forest types in the Southern Appalachians. The Fell and Burn Technique provides an economical and effective alternative to herbicides, successfully establishes an enrichment planting of pines, and improves the quality of hardwood stems. Here we describe the history and application of the Fell and Burn Technique and discuss its benefits.
