The piezoelectric stack actuator is one of the most established actuator device for active systems. In this paper a finite element (FE) formulation for a piezoelectric rod is derived. The FE formulation provides a model of stack actuators by which the dynamic behaviour is calculated. To validate the FE formulation and to evaluate the performance of a vibration isolation system with stack actuator an experimental setup is designed and tested. In a first set of experiments a feedforward control concept is used and the results are compared with the FE simulation. Feedforward control requires a reference signal which is not always available in real applications. Therefore a second set of experiments is performed with a proportional feedback controller.
