Most embedded processing applications require high bandwidth connections to the Internet in order to exchange data and accept control and configuration commands. An easy way to implement this connectivity is to use an FPGA with an internal Ethernet MAC and an external PHY. A reference design using a Xilinx FPGA and a National Ethernet PHY has been created by Avnet Design Services. The design uses a daughter card that can be connected to a development board to provide the Ethernet PHY function required of an embedded application. The paper will describe the features and functionality of the design as well as the size, performance and cost of the final circuit board implementation. This Reference Design will be demonstrated in the Reference Design Village.
