Through the evolution of Charpy tests the following problems will be examined in this paper the effect of notch geometry on stress distribution in Charpy specimens, the use of local stress criteria for fracture emanating from notches, the initiation fracture sites in Charpy specimens, the influence notch geometry on brittle-ductile transition, the determination of fracture toughness J{sub}(IC) using Charpy specimens, the effect of loading rate on fracture toughness on pre-cracked Charpy specimens.
