Methanol Oxidation Reaction: Strong Anion Effects on the Yields of Soluble Products.

Anions of the supporting electrolyte can have a strong inhibiting effect on the electrooxidation of methanol at Pt electrodes. Thus, much higher oxidation rates are observed in HClO4 than in H2SO4 or H3PO4 as supporting electrolytes. At Pt(111) and Pt(100) lower currents are observed in H2SO4 than in HClO4. While at Pt(111) the current is by a factor of 10 lower in H2SO4 than on HClO4 (Fig. 1), at Pt(100) the inhibition factor is 2 and at Pt(110) almost the same currents are observed in both supporting electrolytes. Thus, the inhibiting effect on methanol oxidation follows the strength of the metal-anion interaction. It was thus suggested that adsorbed anions block the surface and inhibit methanol adsorption.
