The paper is in two parts. Part I reviews evidence concerning the ways in which, snow, ice, frost, and even low temperatures produced by natural means have been utilised by man in various parts of the world at different periods. Part II is concerned with European prehistory and the use of pits for storage in snow and ice. By the very nature of the materials concerned, the evidence regarding use is often circumstantial and clearly some form of judgment about the validity of the such evidence has had to be made. The writer therefore has limited the discussion to those items which she feels are the most relevant.
