Lithium ion batteries provide tremendous benefits to underwater, aerial and ground unmanned vehicles. Lithium ion's high energy density allows weight and volume savings that improves the mobility of the vehicle, and that would allow for additional space that could be used for cameras or other components. Another advantage lithium ion has over other technologies is improved survivability, with a wide range of operating temperatures and the potential to be used for more than one mission. This paper will highlight these improvements over mature chemistries in two applications: autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) and high altitude endurance (HAE) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).
