Lithium ion batteries provide tremendous benefits to underwater, aerial and ground unmannedrnvehicles. Lithium ion’s high energy density allows weight and volume savings that improves the mobilityrnof the vehicle, and that would allow for additional space that could be used for cameras or otherrncomponents. Another advantage lithium ion has over other technologies is improved survivability, with arnwide range of operating temperatures and the potential to be used for more than one mission. Thisrnpaper will highlight these improvements over mature chemistries in two applications: autonomousrnunderwater vehicle (AUV) and high altitude endurance (HAE) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).
