Most of the research on ship-ship interaction described in the literature is restricted to the simplest case in which just two ships are present. In only a handful of papers has anything been said about the situation where three or more ships are involved in the interaction scenario. The present paper examines the interaction forces and moments acting on several ships, using an improved numerical scheme based on the discrete vortex distribution method. The aim of the present paper is to 1. consider the magnitude of the forces and moments involved and review their implications with regard to design 2. identify zones in parameter space in which the rudder cannot produce sufficient side force and / or moment to be able to maintain the ship in straight-line motion. 3. assess the consequences of being in such a "zone of uncontrollability".
