Transmission error has been widely considered to be one of the main sources of gear whine noise. However, due to the lack of any appropriate gear design tools, gears has been generally designed without due consideration to minimizing transmission error in the past. This work focused on implementing a simulation program to predict transmission error, thus its level of gear whine noise, without undertaking a time-consuming experimental test. The validities of such an approach were verified by comparing the cumulated test data from the past with simulated transmission error. The study is to be the first phase of on going efforts to utilize analytical tools in designing optimum gear geometry for whine noise.
