Amplitude Selective Damping Economical way to increase ride comfort without compromising vehicle safety (First Report)

A shock absorber is one of the most important systems in terms of vehicle behaviour and performance. In particular, the shock absorber is directly related to the ride comfort and handling performance. Their function is to dissipate the energy introduced in the vehicle by road irregularities and by driving situations. In this paper, a new Amplitude Selective Damper (ASD) is proposed to improve ride comfort without any loss of handling and safety. A smart system of two separately adjustable piston valves enables very low damping forces in most frequent driving conditions such as straight-ahead driving on highways or secondary roads but changes to higher damping forces when required. The proposed damper does not need any electric wiring and no additional energy consumption is necessary.
